  1. I'm surprised nobody noticed that I tweaked the logo ever so slightly last week. It was a little blurry and a little larger and had a different divider between the logo and the forums text.

  2. This page is more applicable - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open-source_software

Open-source software (OSS) is computer software with its source code made available and licensed with a license in which the copyright holder provides the rights to study, change and distribute the software at no cost to anyone and for any purpose.

Blesta is not free, and cannot be redistributed. It's made available under a commercial license. To contrast, we have released minPHP (The framework for which Blesta v3 is built) as OSS (Open Source Software) under the MIT license.

  3. but that's not open source really because it's not 100% open sourced it's 99% open sourced.

    According to Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source

In production and development, open source as a philosophy promotes a universal access via free license to a product's design or blueprint, and B) universal redistribution of that design or blueprint, including subsequent improvements to it by anyone.[citation needed].

Blesta isn't open source at all, rather the vast majority of the code is unencoded and available to edit for your own use. While we choose to make the code available, there's a difference between that and open source software.

  4. While we're on the topic of Phillips Data Inc.'s structure... I'm curious if you've ever considered the Open Source business model?

It seems to be doing well for Redhat and various other companies.

P.S. I am aware of your framework and various bits that are under an open, permissive license.

Of course we have considered Open Source, we contribute to it -- http://github.com/phillipsdata however Blesta is a commercial product and will remain so.

AFAIK, Blesta has been around for many years. I assume at this point that it is a relatively stable company...

    Yup

  5. Trust me Paul, you will have at least 50% by next year and maybe more. I believe more re-sellers will be selling your product in hosting packs and on licensing sites.

I do believe you will be the main competitor shortly :D

Thanks for your confidence! We can do it with your guys help.

Lower priced, slightly limited, options are nice too. Not that you shouldn't get paid! Just works for the little guys too! :)

But it does make me feel a little more at ease, knowing Blesta is powered by a fully legitimate company. The Internet has all kinds- if you know what I mean!

I can definitely see the benefits for ease of entry for small hosting companies. Something to consider.

We're definitely legit! Real people in a real office, writing really awesome code!

If you're ever in the area, let me know, you're welcome to stop by and say hi.

  6. Good questions! We are all full time, and work in the same building in Tustin, California. A lot of other companies do really well with remote staff, but we find that being able to communicate with each other frequently, as you only can in the same location, has been a really good thing.

The $99 promo right now is a great deal and it is really cheap. The price will be going up when we release v3 officially and we'll announce pricing soon. It will be similar to our largest competitor, nothing ridiculous. Having a full time staff, and office rent is not cheap, especially in California. But, if we can capture a good 30-40% of the market in the next year or two I think we'll be doing really well.

  7. I can definitely see how small hosting companies might not benefit from hostingcon, it definitely has more appeal to hosting industry vendors. Though, there is probably benefit in establishing better relationships with those companies you work with.. control panels, registrars, merchant providers, etc. When you have suggestions, they are much more likely to act when you discuss in person with a higher up.

All of the sessions had someone handing out and collecting surveys for the session. One of the questions was whether or not the speaker had a sales pitch -- they have said that speakers with a sales pitch will not be invited back. So, I think that's something that was definitely a problem, and that they are working on. In all the sessions we went to, there was maybe one or two indirect sales pitches, so I think it's much improved.

I can say that you're probably right.. there does seem to be a bit of a clique, but I don't think it's overt. I wouldn't say everyone knows who we are, but we did fit in pretty well and didn't have much trouble talking with people. It's clear that a lot of people know each other very well, but I think it's because the industry is so small.

  8. As you guys know, Cody and I went to Austin this week for HostingCon.

We had a really good time, and met with a ton of people. It's definitely interesting to see what everyone is up to, meet some people again, and others for the first time in person. Here are a few pics from our time there..

Some of you may be wondering, yes we did meet both Aaron and Matt and others from their team. We didn't think to ask for a photo at the time, but we had a really good, friendly chat. Even though we are competitors, it was really nice to meet them.

Ultimately, we strengthened some relationships, formed some new ones, and got a lot of great ideas that should be coming down the pipeline in the future. Wherever we went, we found people who were excited about Blesta and wished us the best. It's really great to know that so many people are behind us, and it's hard not to get at least a little charged up about the future.

So, was HostingCon Austin a success? Absolutely!

    Looking forward to the future.

  9. Well so far, Blesta has given us the best initial impression of any billing system we've used. We managed to code up our own merchant gateway without much issue. The 2 bugs we found were fixed the same day they were reported.

I also love the level of interaction here in the forums.

Hey thanks! Glad to hear you were able to get familiar with the gateway system so quickly too.

  10. I don't wanna think of the money, time and effort I've invested in Hostbill.

    Or Ubersmith for that matter.

I still get angry thinking about WHMCS doing a custom module for me back in the day.

Then there is the disaster that was modernbill.

Billing & automation systems have been our biggest limitation in the 13 years we've been doing this. Honestly, excel and simply accounting was probably the most reliable...

There definitely hasn't been enough love from hosting billing vendors in the past decade. Hopefully we can change that and shake things up a bit.

  11. After a wee bit of testing the contacts...

If a contact sends an email to a support dept, the ticket is opened under the correct client. But under the primary contact and not the contact who sent the email. When staff reply, the response is mailed to the primary contact and not the contact who submitted the request.

Is this the expected action? I know that I expected it to email the contact who submitted the request.

Good observation. I suspect this is the intended behavior for now, but we may want to take a look at this once the ability for contacts to login has been implemented.

  12. For us, the ability to have contacts on the account is a requirement.

Giving the contacts the ability to login would be absolutely perfect.

We have many clients who host with us but have a web dev who deals with our support and an accountant who deals with billing, etc.

Contact logins are planned, so you can expect that in the next few official releases.

  13. Apparently HB licenses are selling for around $50 - $100 on hostbillforums.  I'd be furious if I was one of the suckers who paid $999 a few weeks ago -- now it's worth 95% less!

Agreed, their only saving grace is their order forms.  Speaking of, how are the new Blesta order forms coming along?  Any sneak previews?

Nothing to see yet, additional order templates will likely be coming post release, starting with 3.1.

  14. PS4 allows backward compatibility mate, xbox don't they also only allow you to trade games once, PS4 don't.

You also don't need PS Plus to go online but there are rumors going about.

Are you saying you can play PS3 games on the PS4? Because I heard the opposite, but maybe it was just a rumor.
