Rant: Godaddy Is Greedy

For a long while I had purchased my domains through them... Switched to name cheap a little over 2 years ago.

My brother in law ran a pretty popular mobile tech blog on a domain he purchased from godaddy. Due to lack of time.. He stopped blogging and let the domain expire. I hosted the site for him and still have a backup. I thought i might try to reboot it the other day. So I searched for the domain to find out that godaddy is now selling it as a premium domain for 1K! They must have saw the attraction that domain was getting and jumped on the opportunity to make money off of it.

I mainly just renew in advance.

Same here. Approx a week in advanced.

I always have domains set to auto renew, and important domains I usually renew out far in advance.

Aha like Blesta :) I will do that when I get more cash in daily, I save up incase I need the money for bills and I have like 20+ domains.

... and I have like 20+ domains.

lol, I have about the same, I never auto-renew as it makes me consider the worthiness each time one comes up. If I decide it really isn't working for me, I drop it, otherwise I renew it. Saying this, however, I do have certain domains that I would love to drop but are so engrained into systems and networks that they would cause more problems then it was worth to remove them.

Yeah, it's good through May 30, 2023, don't have to worry about that expiring anytime soon.

I wonder what their reason is for capping it to 10 years.

That's a good reason. I actually get a reminder about auto-renews a week or so in advance so have the opportunity to cancel the auto renew, which I often do for domains I later realize I will never use.
